Forget Realism, Let’s Have Some Magic

Over at Borderline Hikikomori, Crisu writes about attempting a lecture on mahou shoujo. To this, Damien Kellis of Moe Check! responds with a piece on shoujo versus shounen. Considering that I’ve spent over four hours over the past two weekends working on an unfinished, content-light Cardcaptor Sakura post, I’m thoughtful on which magical girl series I’ve seen and enjoyed (or didn’t enjoy), and why.

Sports Apparel: Tennis Uniform

If there’s one thing that does not interest me, it’s sports. However, there are two sports which generally have nice uniforms: tennis and soccer. (It’s only a coincidence that tennis is about the only sport I can actually play, were I one to play sports.)

Cardcaptor Apparel: Water Jester

Sakura wears this in episode three, “Sakura’s Heart-Racing First Date”. I don’t understand the jester theme to the outfit, but maybe that’s just what it is: a theme. Does Tomoyo sit around thinking, “What would Sakura look like in a jester swimsuit”? Maybe she thought, “What did court jesters swim in? Oh, I have to make a jester swimsuit for Sakura to wear!” This outfit isn’t visible in Tomoyo’s van of costumes in the second episode, so it’s possible she threw an idea together quickly after learning the enemy would be water-based.

Sakura’s Magical Footwear

Lately I’ve been going through episodes of Cardcaptor Sakura episodes, preparing write-ups on Sakura’s Cardcaptor outfits. I’ve become more observant of what characters are wearing when, and am taking notice of when outfits are reworn in later episodes (something I hadn’t noticed with this series, but had back when I first watched Saint Tail).
