By now all my early theories of the reason behind the haibane and the halos have been forgotten on my part, and this episode cements that.
Rakka’s depression stems from believing Kuu will be forgotten, and that the haibane have no meaning beyond to exist after they are born and before they leave. The missing piece here is seeing the impact Kuu has had on her. The lessons and memories Kuu left with her.
Things are piecing together slowly. The pieces to Reki’s past have mostly come together, although there’s still mystery behind Hyohko’s part in Reki’s running away.
There’s a graveyard on the way to the council’s temple. Is this a graveyard for humans, or for haibane who never left?
Rakka has reached a point where she is both curious about what lies outside the town walls and where she is content with the life before her in Old Home and in town. Sumika is an example of finding joy, and ones life, ones future, within the walled community.
