I meant the book "haibane seikatsu nisshi". The scanlations called it "Haibane Lifestyle Diary". It includes some background information, such as maps of the town. Basically it's a dump of the working material developed before and during the production of the anime, plus a few amusing comics (e.g. Nemu discusses getting used pantsu and bra -- of course the bra is a problem because of wings...) I drafted several responses, but to no avail. Maybe I should assume them being literary devices? The canon (including the Life of Haibane booklet) is somewhat muted on (1) and does not answer it clearly. You can build your own theories for fun.
